Ethiopian Harrar, known as one of world’s oldest coffees, is grown largely from heirloom varieties of Arabica that are seldom cultivated anywhere else in the world. For centuries, and still today, the coffee cherries are picked and spread out to dry in the sun with the fruit skin on, known as dry/natural processed. This method coupled with the unique variety brings forth its distinctive taste. Deep Blue Harrar is our brightest Ethiopian coffee to date. It marries all the flavor profiles of other Ethiopian coffees, while serving it up in a smooth low acid tasting cup.
Quick Facts:
- Origin: Harrar, Ethiopia
- Roast: Medium
- Process: Natural
- Altitude: 1400-2000m
- Varietal: Heirloom, Mokka
- Cupping Notes: Bright and clean coffee. Notes of blackberry, blueberry, and walnut.
The Natural Process:
This coffee is also one of our few “Naturally Processed” coffees. This does not imply it is healthier than others, but rather that the fruit around the coffee bean (seed) is not removed and washed away before sun-drying, which also provides a natural fermentation. This imparts flavors unique to the coffees that undergo this process such as berry fruits, a wine-like sweetness, and often a fuller body and mouthfeel.

Ethiopian Harrar Deep Blue Coffee
We are trying this coffee for the first time. We grind it fresh every time with a bit of AJ Wild decaf (also a winner). 3:1 blend. This is a very smooth cup of coffee, low acid and just as described with some of the berry notes we lean toward.
